Gasperini Stays Put… and Wants to Face Real Madrid

The Atalanta coach confirmed that he will continue as the head coach of the Italian club, the Europa League champions, who will face the Champions League winners.

Gian Piero Gasperini confirmed this Sunday, after the victory against Torino (3-0) in Serie A, that he will remain the coach of Atalanta next season. Despite having a contract until June 2025, there were many rumors in Italy about Gasperini leaving Atalanta after eight seasons in charge, crowned by the Europa League title that ‘La Dea’ won last Wednesday against Bayer Leverkusen, marking the club’s first European title in history.

But the coach denied all rumors, including those of his move to Napoli, after the match against Torino. “De Laurentis (president of Napoli) has been praising me for many years and that flatters me. Napoli will make its choice, I am tied to Atalanta and will continue to be so. I have never said otherwise about my stay in Bergamo. I just wanted to play the matches. Atalanta’s commitment was superior to everything else; I never gave space to other discussions,” he told Sky Sports Italia.

“There is a very strong bond with the club and mutual affection. We have been together for many years and there have never been any problems. I have always been tied to Atalanta. After 8 years, some wear and tear may appear, but it’s normal,” he added. Furthermore, he stated that he prefers to play the UEFA Super Cup against Real Madrid, who will play the Champions League final next Saturday against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley. “We have achieved a feat, and we are aware of it. Bergamo continues to celebrate this week. Next season will be difficult, but I don’t think it will be any more difficult than this one. It’s impossible; we play every three days. If anything, we will add the UEFA Super Cup, which would be great against Real Madrid…,” he concluded.
