Euro 2024: Scraps between fans ahead of England-Serbia in Gelsenkirchen

Unsavoury scenes of violence erupted in the city of Gelsenkirchen between England and Serbia fans. The two teams, who play their opening Euro match tonight at Schalke’s Veltins-Arena, have notoriously passionate supporters. The match, classified as high-risk, saw clashes break out in the streets of the German city this afternoon.

Restaurant chairs and bottles were used as weapons. Serbian fans are said to have managed to steal English flags. Riot police had to intervene to stop the clashes. England fans are heavily represented in Germany. This weekend, an estimated 40,000 English supporters have descended on Gelsenkirchen and other nearby cities such as D√ľsseldorf and Cologne.
