Real Madrid – Milan (1-3): Player Ratings

Real Madrid Player Ratings – Tchouameni Has a Nightmare, Only a Few Stand Out

Lunin 6 – Did his best to contain Milan’s attacks, making several good saves that only served to keep the scoreline somewhat respectable.

Vazquez 5 – Found himself constantly overwhelmed by Leão and Theo Hernandez, both of whom were relentless down his side. Things didn’t improve for him in the second half.

Militao 5 – Far too soft against Leão, allowing the Portuguese player to get a shot off in the move eventually finished by Morata. Struggled in other situations as well.

Rüdiger 6 – The more solid of the two central defenders. Hard to get past and always a threat during set-pieces. Scored what would have been the 2-3, but it was ruled offside due to Rodrygo’s positioning.

Mendy 6 – Made some good runs on the left, supporting Real’s forward play. At the end of one such run, he capitalised on an error by Theo, setting up the play that led to the penalty. From 74’: Fran Garcia 6 – Came on in a difficult situation; his performance was decent given the context.

Valverde 5.5 – An underwhelming first half from the Uruguayan, who struggled to make an impact in both attack and defence. Unsurprisingly, he didn’t return after the break. From 46’: Brahim Diaz 5.5 – The former Milan player came on with decent energy but lacked composure in the final third.

Tchouameni 4 – A disastrous performance, making nearly every mistake possible in 45 minutes. Lost track of Thiaw for the first goal and effectively set up the second goal for the opposition. From 46’: Camavinga 5.5 – Not as disappointing as Tchouameni but still not effective enough to earn a passing mark.

Modric 5.5 – Not his usual midfield maestro self. Struggled to orchestrate Madrid’s play with his signature precision passing. From 63’: Ceballos 5.5 – Tasked with reigniting Madrid’s midfield, but failed to make a significant difference.

Bellingham 4.5 – An absolutely anonymous outing from the former Dortmund star, who failed to influence the game and was easily contained whenever he ventured into the Milan penalty area. From 74’: Rodrygo 5.5 – Had few opportunities to make an impact and, unlike some of his past late-game heroics, he disappointed here, especially given his Champions League record.

Vinicius 5.5 – Played in bursts, one of which won him the penalty that he converted to make it 1-1. However, it was essentially his only positive contribution in an otherwise tense performance.

Mbappé 5 – Managed a couple of shots that Maignan denied, but overall he was well-contained by the Milan defence, with long periods where he couldn’t impact the game.

Carlo Ancelotti 5 – It feels odd to give such a low rating to the “King of the Champions League,” but tonight it’s deserved. Lost the tactical battle to Fonseca, who outmanoeuvred his Real side. Madrid are in a critical phase, and a change is needed.

Milan Player Ratings – Fonseca Calls, Leão Responds. Reijnders Shines as Man of the Match

Maignan 7 – His hands left their mark on this victory at the Bernabéu. Made several crucial saves in both halves, including a couple that preserved the lead.

Emerson Royal 5.5 – Yes, he was late to the tackle that led to the penalty equaliser in the first half, but overall his performance wasn’t one to disregard. From 93’: Calabria (no rating)

Thiaw 7 – Kicked off a dream night for his team, heading in Pulisic’s pinpoint corner from close range. He didn’t stop there, putting in a solid shift defensively as well.

Tomori 6.5 – Though he’d been shaky earlier this season, he stayed composed at the Bernabéu, much to the relief of Fonseca and the Milan fans. Focused and consistent to the end.

Theo Hernandez 6.5 – Seemed to thrive with Leão ahead of him. Drove down the left with powerful runs and gave away very little defensively. A solid display.

Fofana 6.5 – Perhaps the least flashy on the pitch, but Fonseca would have had it no other way. He shut down any central routes Real tried to exploit.

Reijnders 8 – To trouble a team like Real Madrid, you need to be something special. He rose to the occasion as man of the match on such a big stage.

Musah 7 – Chosen by Fonseca specifically to double-team Vinicius whenever possible, and he did so diligently, even leading some counterattacks. From 93’: Pavlovic (no rating)

Pulisic 6.5 – Extremely dangerous from dead-ball situations, though less so in Milan’s frequent counterattacks. Still, his cross set up Thiaw’s opener. From 71’: Loftus-Cheek 5.5 – Did the dirty work after coming on, but his golden chance to seal the deal was fired straight at Lunin.

Leão 7.5 – Fonseca’s game plan clearly revolved around him, and Leão delivered. Was one of the main stars at the Bernabéu, capping off his display with an assist for Reijnders. From 78’: Okafor (no rating)

Morata 7.5 – Known for his work rate, but tonight he offered much more. Like a predator, he latched onto Lunin’s fumble to make it 1-2. A complete performance, covering the pitch. From 71’: Abraham 5.5 – Didn’t bring the same spark as Morata, whether in pressing or carrying the ball forward.

Paulo Fonseca 8 – It takes bravery to stick to your tactics at the Bernabéu, and even more so to adjust with Musah covering as a makeshift full-back to support Emerson. Beyond the tactical plans and individual performances, he received a commanding response from the whole team, led by Leão. A night to be remembered for a long time.
