Serie A: Grifone Rescue point as Rossoneri woes continue

Mateo Retegui saved Genoa from a sure defeat with a late equaliser in a thrilling 3-3 Serie A draw at the San Siro. The Rossoneri extended their undefeated streak against the Grifone to five games in league matches.

Stefano Pioli made five changes from the Rossoneri side that drew with Juventus. The Grifone swiftly took advantage in the opening five minutes. Fikayo Tomori gave away a penalty, allowing Genoa to score for the first time in four league matches against the Rossoneri. Retegui confidently converted the spot-kick, putting it beyond Marco Sportiello. Christian Pulisic then came close to equalising, curling an impressive effort that hit the right post.

The visitors aimed for a second successive clean sheet and their first at San Siro since 2017. They did well to keep Milan’s forwards at bay for much of the first period. However, they couldn’t prevent Alessandro Florenzi from levelling the score just before halftime. Florenzi headed home perfectly from Samuel Chukwueze’s cross, scoring his first goal of the season.

Genoa quickly regained the lead after the break, with Caleb Ekuban impressing with a calm header inside the right post. Milan turned the game around with two quick goals, taking the lead for the first time. Matteo Gabbia scored with a powerful header from close range before Olivier Giroud netted a fantastic volley.

Against the odds, Genoa managed to equalise in the final minutes, thanks to a defensive mishap from Milan. Retegui was in the right place to tap home from close range. Former Rossoneri striker Alberto Gilardino will now prepare his side to face US Sassuolo, AS Roma, and Bologna in their last three games as they aim for a top-half finish. Milan, however, have little left to play for, although they are yet to confirm their runners-up spot after six successive winless outings across all competitions.
