Ralf Rangnick to Bayern? Report claims coaching switch imminent

Bayern Munich’s quest for a new manager to replace Thomas Tuchel has reportedly taken a significant turn with the club opening negotiations with former Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick.

With Tuchel’s future at the club in serious doubt, Bayern has been actively scouting for a suitable replacement. Initial reports linked the Bavarians with Xabi Alonso, who impressed during his time at Bayer Leverkusen. However, Alonso opted to extend his stay with Leverkusen, leaving Bayern to explore other options.

Julian Nagelsmann, the German national team manager, was also considered a frontrunner, but his recent contract extension with the German Football Association until 2026 effectively ruled him out.

Zinedine Zidane, another name mentioned in the media, has reportedly been approached by Bayern, but it appears Ralf Rangnick has emerged as the preferred candidate. According to Sky Germany, Bayern’s sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic has held talks with Rangnick, who is currently managing the Austrian national team.

The 65-year-old German coach is under contract with Austria until the 2026 World Cup, meaning Bayern would need to pay a compensation fee to secure his services. Despite this, Rangnick is reportedly the club’s top priority ahead of Roberto De Zerbi.

Rangnick’s extensive experience as a manager and director of football, coupled with his proven track record of success, makes him an attractive proposition for Bayern. His appointment would signal a shift in the club’s managerial philosophy, moving away from the young and inexperienced coaches they have favored in recent years.

Should Rangnick take over the reins at Bayern, he would face the daunting task of replacing Tuchel, who has led the club to three consecutive Bundesliga titles and a Champions League final. However, Rangnick’s experience and pedigree suggest he has the qualities to step into the role and guide Bayern to continued success.
