Player Ratings: Manchester City 1-1 Real Madrid (3-4 Pens)

Man of the Match – Andriy Lunin (8): He was a brick wall tonight. The Ukrainian goalkeeper put in a colossal performance. He had a very hectic first half; on several occasions he showed that he deserved his place as number 1 this season, notably with some great saves like the inswinging corner where he pulled the ball out of the fingertips at the end of the first half. His second half was identical to the first where he delayed the Citizens’ equalizer for as long as he could. He was monstrous in the penalty shootout by stopping two shots and allowed his team to go to the semi-finals.

Manchester City (4-3-3)

Ederson (5.5): Unfortunate on the first goal, he can be congratulated on a magnificent reflex save on Rodrigo’s first shot. Otherwise, he had a rather quiet match tonight where he was only rarely called upon. He will have chosen the right side to stop Modric’s penalty but unfortunately he was unable to make the difference against the opposing goalkeeper.

Kyle Walker (7): Absent in the first leg, he brought a lot to this match, especially in the offensive aspect where he played his physique and speed very well. Defensively, he also prevented several deep runs from Vinícius.

Rúben Dias (6): Complete match for the Portuguese: he was only rarely worried and called upon in this match, but he was present on the few opposing incursions.

Manuel Akanji (7): Another very complete match for the former BVB player. He showed good things offensively thanks to several climbs that allowed him to offer some good balls. Defensively, he had more difficulties on some opposing incursions at the start but he grew stronger throughout the match to the point of being one of the Citizens most dangerous on the attacking front. He was replaced by J.Stones.

Josko Gvardiol (6.5): For a player who plays center-back, he has perfectly adapted to the position of left-back where he does not hesitate to go up to support Grealish. From a defensive point of view, he plays perfectly with his physique and technique against opposing attacks.

Rodri (6.5): Complete match for Rodri, as usual his passing quality was impeccable but it did not make a real difference for a long time. He managed to show himself as the match progressed.

Phil Foden (4.5): Quite a complicated match for the young Englishman. Used to giving us great performances lately, he had trouble shaking off the opponent’s marking tonight. He had a few chances but all unsuccessful.

Bernardo Silva (5): He was a free electron in the match where he gravitated around the attacking trio and splashed the match with his technical quality but also passing. He showed very good things without being sharp and his end of the match was more complicated in the image of his missed penalty.

Kevin De Bruyne (7): After a half-time and a long part of the second half where he was rather absent, he managed to be dangerous at the best moment by being perfectly placed to take over the shot blocked by the opposing goalkeeper, which allowed City to equalize. He was replaced by M.Kovačić.

Jack Grealish (6.5): He plays a lot on his left side; he managed to make himself available for his team and beat Carvajal almost every time either by his technical quality and his dribbles or by his speed. He was replaced by J.Doku who, from his first balls, was dangerous, perfectly took the depth on Carvajal and knew how to dive into the axis to offer himself the blocked shot which will bring the Citizens’ equalizer.

Erling Haaland (3.5): His first half was mixed between good and less good, he managed to be dangerous on several occasions, notably with his heading but without being surgical in the last move. His second half was again almost ghostly where he had few opportunities to shine. He was replaced by J.Álvarez.

Real Madrid (4-3-3)

Andriy Lunin (8): See above.

Ferland Mendy (5): Average match for the former OL. Defensively, he alternated between the good and the less good, he was in difficulty in the first half on the incursions of De Bruyne, however his start of the second half was much better. From an offensive point of view, he did not try much.

Nacho Fernández (6.5): Defensively, he was impeccable tonight, on several occasions he showed very good things such as his defensive return where he is chased by Haaland and takes the ball out just in front of the line. In general, whether on corners or on phases of play, he has shown that he is a rock in this Madrid defense.

Antonio Rüdiger (6.5): He has once again shown a very good quality of ball recovery, his defensive qualities have been very important to hold the score like his defensive return on Grealish in the first half. He has once again shown tonight that he is the boss of this defense.

Dani Carvajal (3.5): In difficulty on his right side against Grealish, he often lacked sharpness and was regularly caught off guard or was late on the action. City’s goal at the end of the second half came from his side. He was the weak link of the Madrid team tonight. He was replaced by E.Militão.

Toni Kroos (5.5): Complete match for the former Bayern player. He showed that he has great technical ease and a magnificent one-touch game, he was able to perfectly circulate the ball during his team’s restarts. He was replaced by L.Modrić.

Eduardo Camavinga (5.5): Average match for the French international. He played very well with his physical qualities and his passing qualities. However, as the match progressed, he gradually disappeared from the pitch and was sucked into the Citizens’ domination in midfield.

Federico Valverde (4.5): The Uruguayan international showed that he has a great technical ease, whether with his passing quality or his offensive qualities, but despite everything he lacked sharpness in his choices or in the last moves.

Vinícius Júnior (4.5): He was dangerous from the start of the match with the magnificent cross to Rodrygo but was then very well taken by Walker and Dias who closed the door to his corridor. Completely cooked, he was replaced during the first part of the extra time by L.Vasquez.

Jude Bellingham (3.5): Quite an average match for the English international. He was especially good on defensive returns, from an offensive point of view, his first half was quite dull with few possibilities and his second was completely transparent.

Rodrygo (5.5): He got into the match perfectly. He was the star of the evening, scoring in the 12th minute from the start of the match. He knew how to be in the right place to take over his shot previously stopped by Ederson and he was able to offer his team the advantage at the start of the match in a practically empty goal. His second half was more complicated since, like his teammates on the attacking front, he was struggling. He was replaced by B.Diaz.
