Inter held to draw by Cagliari, Scudetto still within reach

Inter Milan’s march towards the Serie A title suffered a minor setback as they were held to a thrilling 2-2 draw by a determined Cagliari side at the San Siro.

The Nerazzurri started strong, buoyed by AC Milan’s earlier slip-up. They nearly took the lead through a spectacular Barella volley, but Cagliari goalkeeper Simone Scuffet pulled off a superb save. Inter’s dominance continued, and they deservedly broke the deadlock in the 12th minute thanks to a well-worked team move finished off by Marcus Thuram.

Cagliari, forced to defend deep, hit back with dangerous counter-attacks. They were unlucky not to equalize when Barella’s headed goal was controversially ruled offside just before halftime.

The second half was a tense affair. Inter pressed for a second goal, with Scuffet again making some excellent saves. However, against the run of play, Cagliari clawed their way back into the game through a powerful strike by Eldor Shomurodov.

Inter’s joy was short-lived, though, as they were awarded a penalty after Yerry Mina handled the ball in the box. Hakan Çalhanoğlu coolly converted from the spot to restore Inter’s lead.

Just when it looked like Inter would secure all three points, Cagliari snatched another equalizer. A hopeful long ball found Nicolas Viola in the box, and he made no mistake to level the score for the visitors.

The drama continued until the final whistle, with Cagliari nearly snatching a dramatic winner in the dying seconds.

Despite the draw, Inter remain firmly in control of the title race. They can secure the Scudetto with a win over arch-rivals AC Milan in the upcoming Derby della Madonnina next week.
