Liverpool face their biggest test yet in the Europa League as they host Italian giants Atalanta in the first leg of their quarter-final clash at Anfield on Thursday.

The Reds booked their spot in style, hammering Sparta Prague 11-2 on aggregate in the last round. Meanwhile, Atalanta edged out Sporting Lisbon, whose manager is rumored to be taking the Liverpool job next season.

Liverpool will be without several key players for the first leg. Injuries continue to plague the squad, with seven players currently sidelined. However, there’s a glimmer of hope for Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Diogo Jota, who might be available for the weekend match against Crystal Palace after participating in light training this week.

Longer-term absentees include Joel Matip, Ben Doak, Thiago Alcantara, and Stefan Bajcetic. Bajcetic is making progress after a calf issue and could be back in the first-team soon.

Manager Jurgen Klopp might opt for experience in defense, replacing youngster Jarell Quansah with Ibrahima Konate after Quansah’s mistake against Manchester United. Cody Gakpo and Joe Gomez could also be brought in to freshen up the attack.

Atalanta, on the other hand, have a near full-strength squad available. Young defender Giorgio Scalvini is the only injury concern after picking up a hamstring injury and is expected to miss both legs.

Charles De Ketelaere is back from a minor issue but is unlikely to start in the creative midfield role, possibly behind Aleksey Miranchuk and Teun Koopmeiners. Miranchuk impressed with two assists in the second leg against Sporting, while Koopmeiners, despite requesting a transfer, remains Atalanta’s main playmaker.

Predicted Lineups:

Liverpool : Kelleher; Gomez, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Szoboszlai, Endo, Mac Allister; Salah, Gakpo, Diaz

Atalanta BC : Musso; Toloi, Djimsiti, Kolasinac; Zappacosta, Ederson, De Roon, Ruggeri; Koopmeiners; Lookman, Scamacca
