AC Milan vs. Roma: Probable Lineups

The Europa League quarterfinals kick off with an all-Italian battle as AC Milan host Roma at the iconic San Siro on Thursday.

Milan have dominated their domestic clashes this season, winning both Serie A meetings and remaining undefeated in their last nine encounters with the Giallorossi. However, Roma shouldn’t be underestimated, boasting a history of success in European competitions.

The Rossoneri will miss key defender Fikayo Tomori due to a UEFA suspension, with Tommaso Pobega and Pierre Kalulu sidelined by injuries. Thankfully, Ruben Loftus-Cheek returns after a one-match domestic ban. The Englishman has been on fire in the Europa League, directly contributing to 11 goals in his last 15 appearances, including scoring in all four matches this season.

Milan’s central defense could see a battle between Malick Thiaw and former Roma player Simon Kjaer to partner Matteo Gabbia.

Roma will be without striker Sardar Azmoun and defender Evan Ndicka due to injury and suspension, respectively. Midfielders Dean Huijsen and Rasmus Kristensen also miss out after not being included in the knockout stage squad list.

Chris Smalling or Diego Llorente is likely to replace Ndicka at the back, while Roma’s attacking options remain potent.

Joining the lethal duo of Paulo Dybala and Romelu Lukaku will be former Milan forward Stephan El Shaarawy, who has racked up five assists in just nine Europa League appearances this season.

Back at San Siro, where he once thrived with Inter Milan, Lukaku will be looking to break a personal slump. Although he was involved in 11 goals in his last eight away games in the competition and scored in his first five meetings against Milan, he hasn’t found the net against them in his last five attempts.

Predicted Lineups:

AC Milan: Maignan, Calabria, Thiaw, Gabbia, Hernandez, Bennacer, Reijnders, Pulisic, Loftus-Cheek, Leao, Giroud

Roma: Svilar, Celik, Mancini, Llorente, Spinazzola, Cristante, Paredes, Pellegrini, Dybala, Lukaku, El Shaarawy
