Ligue 1: Lyon Stage Comeback to Crush Nantes in Eerie Empty Stadium

Lyon came roaring back from a goal down to secure a crucial 3-1 victory over Nantes, extending their winning streak on the road to six games in all competitions. The match, played behind closed doors at the Stade de la Beaujoire due to crowd trouble, saw Nantes take the lead early on through a well-worked header from Matthis Abline.

Despite the lack of a home crowd to cheer them on, Lyon started strong. Corentin Tolisso nearly opened the scoring with a shot from close range, but it sailed over the bar. However, it was Nantes who struck first with a beautifully crafted move in the 16th minute. Moussa Sissoko started the attack with a clever run in midfield, finding Florent Mollet with a pass. Mollet’s cross was met perfectly by Abline, who headed the ball past Anthony Lopes in the Lyon goal.

Lyon responded well, with Ernest Nuamah forcing a sharp save from Alban Lafont with a long-range effort. Mostafa Mohamed was a constant threat for Nantes, causing problems for the Lyon defense. He even came close to doubling Nantes’ lead when he went one-on-one with Lopes, but his shot clipped the outside of the post.

The second half saw Lyon come out with renewed purpose. Alexandre Lacazette nearly equalized when his shot deflected off Nuamah, but Nathan Zézé was there to make a crucial block. Mohamed continued to be a thorn in Lyon’s side, forcing another save from Lopes. Lyon’s attacking efforts lacked precision, with both Lacazette and Said Benrahama failing to find the target with their attempts.

The tide turned dramatically in Lyon’s favor just past the hour mark. Lacazette pounced on a loose ball after Lafont parried Malick Fofana’s shot, leveling the score. Two minutes later, the game took another twist as Fofana, who had just come on as a substitute, unleashed a powerful shot past Lafont to put Lyon ahead.

Gift Orban added the final touch with a goal from close range late in the game, assisted by Mama Baldé. The win leaves Nantes in a precarious position, just two points above the relegation zone. Lyon, on the other hand, keep their hopes of European qualification alive, moving closer to the top six.
