Kepa Arrizabalaga returns to Chelsea after failed loan spell at Real Madrid

Spanish goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga is heading back to Chelsea after a disappointing loan stint at Real Madrid.

Kepa, 29, joined Real last August as a temporary replacement for the injured Thibaut Courtois. However, he never managed to secure the starting spot, only appearing in 16 games across the league and Champions League.

According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea bosses weren’t impressed with Kepa’s performances and won’t be offering him a permanent stay.

The former Athletic Bilbao shot-stopper even struggled to displace Andriy Lunin, Courtois’ usual backup. In fact, Real Madrid are reportedly looking to extend Lunin’s contract.

To add insult to injury, Kepa reportedly requested one last game with Real Madrid before his departure, but coach Carlo Ancelotti denied the wish.
