Bayer Leverkusen: Xabi Alonso announces the return of top scorer Victor Boniface

Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso has announced that top scorer Victor Boniface is set to make his return from injury in the club’s DFB-Pokal semi-final against Fortuna Düsseldorf on Wednesday.

Boniface has been sidelined since January with an adductor injury, but he has returned to training and is in contention to feature against Düsseldorf.

“He will be there and could play,” Alonso said in a press conference. “Not 90 minutes, maybe 45, maybe 30. He has recovered well and trained well.”

The return of Boniface is a major boost for Leverkusen, who are chasing a treble of trophies this season. The Nigerian striker has scored 10 goals and provided seven assists in all competitions this season, and his return will add firepower to a team that is already playing on three fronts.

Leverkusen are currently in first place in the Bundesliga, seven points ahead of Bayern Munich. They also face West Ham in the quarter-finals of the Europa League, with the first leg taking place on April 11.

Alonso hails Boniface’s return

Alonso has hailed the return of Boniface, who he believes will be a key player for Leverkusen in the run-in.

“Victor is a very important player for us,” Alonso said. “He is a goalscorer, he is strong, he is fast, and he is good in the air. He is a complete striker.”

Boniface is eager to make up for lost time and help Leverkusen achieve their goals this season.

“I am very happy to be back,” Boniface said. “I have been working hard in my rehabilitation and I am now ready to play again. I am looking forward to helping the team win trophies.”
