LaLiga: Sevilla secure vital win thanks to Ramos header

Sevilla took a giant leap towards securing their place in La Liga next season with a narrow 1-0 victory over mid-table Getafe at the Estadio Coliseum. The hero for the visitors was none other than veteran defender Sergio Ramos, who rose above the Getafe defense to head home the winner from a corner in the early stages of the match.

This win was crucial for Sevilla, who have struggled on the road this season. It was just their third away win in the entire La Liga campaign and puts them a healthy six points clear of the relegation zone with only eight games remaining.

Despite facing a Getafe side that had only lost twice at home all season, Sevilla started brightly. Their strong opening paid off when Ramos, ever the aerial threat, found the back of the net with a header from a corner. This early goal put the visitors in a comfortable position and silenced the home crowd.

While Sevilla’s goal came against the run of play, Getafe didn’t let their heads drop. They responded well and created several chances to equalize. Notably, Óscar Rodríguez set up Jesús Santiago for a clear opportunity, but the midfielder failed to convert. Sevilla’s goalkeeper, Ørjan Nyland, was also called into action on a couple of occasions to deny Getafe.

Sevilla almost double their lead

The visitors nearly doubled their lead just before halftime when Ramos rose highest again, this time from a free-kick. However, his header was ruled out for offside, denying him a potential first La Liga brace since January 2017.

Getafe came out with renewed purpose in the second half, showcasing why they’ve been so strong at home this season. Mason Greenwood was a constant threat with his long-range efforts, while substitute Juanmi Latasa missed a glaring header that could have changed the game.

Despite a late scare from a Jaime Mata goal that was ruled out for offside, Sevilla held on for a vital three points. This win puts them in a much better position to avoid relegation, while Getafe’s hopes for a first top-half finish since 2020 seem to be fading.
