Íñigo Martínez: Andalusian rivals Sevilla and Betis set to battle for his signature

Sevilla and Betis are reportedly interested in signing Íñigo Martínez, who is set to leave FC Barcelona this summer.

Martínez, a former Athletic Club and Real Sociedad defender, has struggled for regular playing time at Barcelona due to the emergence of Ronald Araújo and the arrival of Andreas Christensen and Jules Koundé. With Xavi Hernandez also keen to move on from the player, Martínez is free to find a new club.

Both Sevilla and Betis have been struggling defensively this season, and they see Martínez as the ideal player to shore up their backlines. The Spanish international is a commanding presence in the air and is also a good reader of the game.

There are a few complications that could prevent a move to either club. Firstly, Martínez is still under contract with Barcelona for another year, and the Catalan club will want to recoup some of the money they spent on signing him in 2021. Secondly, Betis would need to qualify for European competition in order to be able to register Martínez in their squad.

Despite these obstacles, both Sevilla and Betis are reportedly confident of their chances of landing Martínez. They are both prepared to offer him a significant salary, and they believe that his experience and pedigree will make him a valuable addition to their squads.

Other clubs that have been linked with Martínez include Aston Villa and Newcastle United. However, Sevilla and Betis are considered to be the frontrunners for his signature.
