Elye Wahi was benched for RC Lens’ match against Lille and received a stern warning from manager Franck Haise. The French tactician expects much more from the young striker and reportedly had a heated conversation with him.

Wahi was replaced by Wesley Saïd in the starting lineup for the derby, and Haise explained his decision after the match.

“I believe that Wesley Saïd has shown me good things in training in recent weeks,” Haise said to Prime Vidéo. “Elye Wahi was on international duty and had been lacking in his performances in recent matches. It’s between him and me. There is competition for all positions, as in all great teams.”

Wahi has struggled to meet expectations since joining Lens

After a breakthrough season at Montpellier HSC, Wahi has found it difficult to adapt to life at Lens. He has been struggling to deal with the pressure of expectations and the price tag that came with his transfer.

Since arriving in the north of France, the France U21 international has put in a string of unconvincing performances. In around thirty matches, the former Montpellier player has scored only nine goals and provided three assists.

Haise is demanding a significant improvement from Wahi. He wants the striker to be more clinical in front of goal, work harder off the ball, and show more leadership on the pitch.

Wahi has the potential to be a top player, but he needs to find a way to rediscover the form that he showed at Montpellier. If he can do that, he will be a valuable asset to Lens.
