Chelsea’s move for Maignan complicated by Milan contract renewal

Chelsea’s pursuit of AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan has been complicated by the news that the French international is close to signing a new contract with the Italian club.

Maignan, 27, has been in excellent form since joining Milan from Lille in 2021, and his performances have attracted the attention of several top clubs, including Chelsea.

The Blues are in the market for a new goalkeeper as they are not fully convinced by Kepa Arrizabalaga or Edouard Mendy. Maignan had emerged as a top target, but it now seems that he will be out of reach.

According to reports from Fichajes, Maignan is close to agreeing a new deal with Milan that will keep him at the club until 2028. The new contract will reportedly include a significant pay rise and a release clause of around €100 million.

The news of Maignan’s impending contract renewal will come as a blow to Chelsea, who were hoping to sign him this summer. The Blues will now have to look elsewhere for a new goalkeeper, with Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak and Manchester United’s David de Gea among the options being considered.
