Darmstadt vs Bayern Munich Preview: Team news, stats and prediction

Darmstadt are rock bottom of the Bundesliga table and 12 points from safety, after a 2-0 defeat to Leipzig last weekend.

That defeat means the “Lilies” have conceded eight goals in two games, a trend that is unlikely to improve when they host reigning Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

Darmstadt are now winless in 18 league games (6D, 12L) after last weekend’s defeat, which is unsurprisingly the club’s longest run without a win in the top flight and looks set to lead to relegation.

The hosts are also one of only two teams in the division to have taken more points away from home than at home this season, which is not an encouraging statistic as they prepare to welcome a team they have never beaten in the top flight (1D, 8L).

Bayern Munich’s last eight wins over Darmstadt have included an 8-0 thrashing in the reverse fixture.

Bayern became the first team since Mönchengladbach in 1967/68 to score more than 8 goals twice in the same Bundesliga campaign when they demolished Mainz 8-1 last weekend.

The Bavarians have not posted a bigger margin of victory since the turn of the millennium than in the reverse fixture, but the opportunity could present itself again given the gulf in class.

Regardless of the margin, Bayern are in desperate need of three points as their quest for a 12th consecutive Bundesliga title looks to be in vain at this stage, with Leverkusen 10 points clear at the top going into this matchday.

Their recent away form perhaps explains why they are on the verge of relinquishing their title, as they come here on the back of four consecutive away games without a win (1D, 3L), which is almost unheard of for them.

Key Players: Darmstadt striker Aaron Seydel is the only player to have scored for the team in their last three home games, highlighting the paucity of attacking options at their disposal. In contrast, Bayern are blessed in this area, with Harry Kane having scored his fourth hat-trick of the season last weekend, including one in the reverse fixture against Darmstadt.

Hot stat: Bayern Munich have only kept three clean sheets in 12 away league games this season.

I can’t see anything other than a Bayern Munich win here. They are a class above Darmstadt and should win comfortably. I predict a 3-0 win for Bayern.
