Barcelona-Napoli: 15 police officers injured in clashes

The second leg of the Champions League round of 16 between Barcelona and Napoli was a thrilling affair on the pitch, with Barcelona winning 3-1 to progress to the quarter-finals. However, the match was marred by violence off the pitch, as clashes between Barcelona ultras and police left 15 officers injured, according to El Nacional.

The trouble began before the match, when a group of Barcelona ultras from the Boixos Nois group attempted to attack Napoli fans. The Napoli fans were being escorted to the stadium from the city center, and they were able to enter the away section without incident. However, the Boixos Nois group, which is known for its far-right leanings, then turned their attention to the police.

The ultras threw smoke bombs, bottles, and even stones at the police, who were outnumbered. The police were eventually able to disperse the crowd after about 30 minutes, but not before 15 officers were injured. The injuries were minor, but they prevented any arrests from being made.

The police are now relying on CCTV footage to identify those responsible for the violence. The Boixos Nois were also responsible for clashes at the match against Frankfurt in 2022.

Statement from FC Barcelona:

“FC Barcelona condemns the violent acts that took place outside the Camp Nou on Thursday evening. The club regrets the injuries caused to the police officers and expresses its full support to the Mossos d’Esquadra (Catalan police).

FC Barcelona has a zero-tolerance policy for violence and will work with the authorities to identify and punish those responsible. The club is committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all fans.”
