Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro is confident his club can maintain their success even if manager Xabi Alonso leaves at the end of the season.
Leverkusen are currently leading the Bundesliga table, on track to break Bayern Munich’s impressive 11-year dominance. Their recent 3-0 win over Wolfsburg extended their lead at the top to a commanding 10 points. This incredible run has made Alonso a hot property in the coaching world, with rumors linking him to jobs at Liverpool and even Bayern Munich.
However, Carro is unfazed by the speculation. In an interview with DAZN, he acknowledged Alonso’s importance but stressed that the club’s success is built on a strong foundation.
“We’re delighted to have him, but Xabi Alonso is just one piece of the puzzle,” Carro said. “It’s not like everything will fall apart if he leaves. We have a top squad, a strong coaching staff, and [sporting director] Simon Rolfes. Most of the people responsible for our success are already here, with or without Xabi Alonso.”
Leverkusen’s current form is undeniable. They are unbeaten in 36 games across all competitions and boast the meanest defense in the Bundesliga, conceding only 16 goals in 25 matches. While Bayern Munich remains the league’s top scorer, Leverkusen are not far behind.
Only time will tell if Alonso stays or goes, but Leverkusen clearly believe they have the structure and talent in place to continue their remarkable run, regardless of who’s in the dugout.
