Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang breaks new record at Marseille

Marseille, France – Olympique de Marseille striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has overcome a difficult start to the season, rediscovering his scoring touch under interim manager Jean-Louis Gasset.

Initially criticized for his performances with only one goal in his first 12 Ligue 1 appearances, the Gabonese striker has since scored eight goals in his last seven appearances in all competitions, taking his tally to 23 goals in 37 appearances this season.

Gasset praises Aubameyang

Aubameyang’s recent brace against FC Nantes played a significant role in Marseille’s climb to seventh place in Ligue 1, just three points behind fifth-placed RC Lens. In a post-match interview with Prime Video Sport, Gasset admitted to seeking advice from the striker’s former coaches to optimize his role within the team.

“He is THE goalscorer, THE player of the team,” Gasset said. “There is one in every team, in every team in the world, there is a player who makes the difference. We have to protect him and put him in the right place to allow him to keep his energy and make the difference.”

The interim manager’s strategic approach involves understanding Aubameyang’s preferred positions and playing style, and building the team around the experienced striker. Compared to Didier Drogba’s first season at Marseille in 2003/04, Aubameyang has become the first player since the Ivorian to score 23 goals in his first season with the club.
