Ligue 1: Aubameyang on fire as Marseille cruise past Nantes

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang continued his red-hot scoring streak, netting a brace to lead Olympique de Marseille to a comfortable 2-0 victory over Nantes. This marks the fifth consecutive game where the striker has found the net, his best run since September 2019. The win extends Marseille’s winning streak to three games in Ligue 1 and keeps their Champions League qualification hopes alive.

Nantes, aiming for a rare feat – three consecutive away wins for the first time in over a year – opted for a defensive strategy, packing the box and offering little in attack. While this approach initially frustrated Marseille, it all came undone when Aubameyang pounced on Ismaïla Sarr’s low cross for his first goal.

Despite falling behind, Nantes didn’t open up much offensively. Aubameyang nearly doubled his lead with a header but missed narrowly. Marseille continued to create chances, with Sarr blasting wide after good work by Chancel Mbemba. The visitors finally threatened when Moussa Sissoko forced a fingertip save from Pau López with a powerful strike.

In the second half, Nantes boss Jocelyn Gourvennec brought on attackers to chase the equalizer. The pressure nearly paid off when Mostafa Mohamed’s shot was blocked by a last-ditch Mbemba tackle. Marseille responded through Jordan Veretout, whose curling effort was tipped around the post. Bénie Traoré also came close for Nantes but couldn’t convert his chances.

Nantes’ missed opportunities proved costly. Aubameyang punished them again, beating the offside trap to latch onto Geoffrey Kondogbia’s pass. Although his initial effort was saved, he followed up to tap in the rebound at the near post. This sealed the win for Marseille and left Nantes with no way back.

The defeat drops Nantes into the relegation zone, raising fears of a return to the second division for the first time in a decade. Meanwhile, Marseille celebrate their fifth win in five games under new manager Jean-Louis Gasset, who has revitalized the team since taking charge at the Stade Vélodrome.
