Chelsea are the latest Premier League club to join the race for Athletic Bilbao’s exciting young winger Nico Williams, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.
The 21-year-old Spaniard has been on the Blues’ radar for a while now, even before they signed Cole Palmer from Manchester City last summer. Williams’ impressive performances, particularly on the left wing during Athletic’s Copa del Rey run, have kept him firmly in Chelsea’s sights.
With 6 goals and 11 assists to his name this season, Williams is a clear talent. His €50 million release clause makes him an attractive option, but Chelsea already have several players who can operate on the flanks.
This interest in Williams could cast some doubt over the futures of Mykhailo Mudryk and Raheem Sterling. Sterling, in particular, has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia.
Chelsea’s ability to pursue players like Williams will likely hinge on their ability to offload some of their current squad. However, their primary target for the summer transfer window remains a top-class striker.
Athletic Bilbao, meanwhile, are hoping to hold onto Williams. However, they seem to be preparing for a potential departure by lining up Braga’s Álvaro Djaló as a possible replacement.
