Harry Kane scored two goals as Bayern Munich completed a stunning comeback against SS Lazio in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie. The victory means Bayern reach the quarter-finals for the fifth season in a row, while Lazio suffer a fourth defeat in five games.
Following their narrow defeat in the first leg, Bayern fans at the Allianz Arena were desperate for a strong start. However, they were almost left chasing a two-goal deficit when Ciro Immobile missed a golden opportunity to head Lazio in front.
Bayern eventually found their breakthrough just before half-time. Kane met Raphaël Guerreiro’s cross with a clever header that squeezed past Ivan Provedel in the Lazio goal. This goal seemed to spark Bayern into life, and they were soon ahead on aggregate thanks to a stunning volley from Matthijs de Ligt, which was turned in by Thomas Müller.
Bayern completely controlled the second half, and Kane added his second goal of the night just after the hour mark. Leroy Sané’s shot was parried by Provedel, but Kane was on hand to tap in the rebound. Müller almost added a late fourth, but his effort was well saved by the Lazio goalkeeper.
The victory means Bayern can now look forward to the quarter-finals, but manager Thomas Tuchel faces an uncertain future as he is set to leave the club at the end of the season. For Lazio, the outlook is much gloomier. They are currently ninth in Serie A and have only reached the Champions League knockout stages twice in the past 24 years.
