Emery revives Lenglet’s career at Aston Villa

Clement Lenglet has overcome the last obstacle at Aston Villa to remain a starter. For weeks, it was highlighted that he had taken advantage of his opportunity coinciding with some casualties in the center of defense. It was then pointed out that his starting role was directly related to the absence of Pau Torres, who suffered an injury in December and returned recently.

The reality is that the former Villarreal player has started in Aston Villa’s last two matches, against Fulham and Nottingham Forest, partnering Lenglet in central defense. A radical change for the Barça defender because in November Aston Villa considered returning him and now in England they are already talking about the interest in trying to sign him in the summer.

It was Emery who stopped the Frenchman’s departure in the winter market. “I want to keep Lenglet at Villa in the second half of the season. I’m really looking forward to seeing him, I’m really convinced he can help us.” A prediction that has come true.

It should be remembered that Aston Villa was the emergency solution that Barça found in the summer. An operation in the form of a loan that did not even include a purchase option.

Milan’s interest

What’s more, when the English team considered ending the player’s loan in the January market, all roads led to a new loan, in this case to Milan.

Lenglet has been able to turn the situation around and has gone from having only a leading role in the Conference League to being a starter in the Premier League as well. Emery has already highlighted on several occasions the importance of the Frenchman in being the team’s first pass. In this sense, his profile is reminiscent of Pau Torres, another player who has one of his best virtues in the ball output.

Emery has given continuity to the pair for now, but it is still too early to see if they will consolidate until the end of the season. The big decision will come in June, when it will be seen if Aston Villa pushes to keep him, if Milan reappears or if he has to return to Barça. The Frenchman still has a contract with Barça until 2026.
