Match Preview: Real Madrid vs Rayo Vallecano

Real Madrid may be on the verge of signing Kylian Mbappé this summer, but coach Carlo Ancelotti wants his players to stay focused on the present after their 1-1 draw against Rayo Vallecano last Sunday.

“Sometimes there are draws that hurt a little bit,” he said, but after second-placed Girona lost on Monday, Madrid still have a six-point lead at the top of La Liga.

However, Dani Carvajal and Eduardo Camavinga were sent off and booked respectively against Rayo, which means they will miss the game against Sevilla. Ancelotti will therefore have to reshuffle his backline again, although Antonio Rüdiger could make his return.

Los Blancos go into Sunday’s game with a 17-match unbeaten run in the league at the Santiago Bernabéu (14v, 3n) and have only conceded two or more goals in a La Liga home game once this season.

Sevilla, who are tasked with ending that formidable run, are unbeaten in four La Liga games (2v, 2n) since their Copa del Rey elimination at the end of January, which has moved them seven points clear of the relegation zone ahead of this weekend.

After a 1-0 win over Atlético Madrid, last Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Valencia came at the cost of a hamstring injury to Marcos Acuña, who joins a lengthy list of absentees.

Even though both teams have injury problems, the visitors will have no sympathy for their hosts. Sevilla are bidding to avoid defeat in three consecutive away league games for the first time this season (1v, 1n). However, the odds are stacked against them, as the Andalusians have not won away at Madrid since December 2008 (1n, 15d) – a game in which current Sevilla defender Sergio Ramos played for Real Madrid!

Players to watch: Federico Valverde has provided an assist in the opening 10 minutes of Madrid’s last two La Liga games, while five of Youssef En-Nesyri’s last six Sevilla goals have been scored away from home, including two in Madrid against Rayo earlier this month (v 2-1).

Hot stat: Real Madrid have only conceded two goals after the 75th minute in La Liga this season – the fewest in the division heading into this matchday.
