Sevilla files complaint against Real Madrid just before Sunday’s match

Sevilla has filed a complaint against Real Madrid just 24 hours before the two teams are set to meet at the Santiago Bernabéu. The Andalusian club is accusing Real Madrid of inappropriate behavior by Real Madrid TV.

Official statement from Sevilla FC

The news has come as a shock, as it is rare for a club to file a complaint against another for images analyzing the refereeing performance. It is important to note that this could also be a strategy to heat up a high-profile match.

In the first leg match, the referee missed a clear penalty by Jesús Navas on Vinicius Júnior that could have given Real Madrid the victory. Now, this strategy seems to be following the same path as the one used by Barcelona, which yielded results.

Here is an excerpt from the Sevilla FC statement:

“Sevilla FC has filed a complaint this Saturday with the RFEF Competition Committee against the campaign of persecution and harassment carried out by Real Madrid TV, the official television channel of Real Madrid, against Mr. Díaz de Mera, the main referee for tomorrow’s match between Real Madrid and Sevilla FC, and against Mr. González Fuertes, the VAR referee.

Sevilla FC wishes to formally denounce these actions to the federative bodies, in order to assess whether these actions can be considered an infraction of the RFEF General Regulations or any other applicable regulations.

The club also wishes to reiterate its strongest condemnation of these behaviors and campaigns orchestrated to undermine the image of the refereeing body, doing serious damage to Spanish football and calling into question the integrity of the competition.”
