PSV Eindhoven’s long-awaited return to the Champions League knockout stages ended in a 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund. The Dutch side went ahead through former Dortmund player Donyell Malen, but a second-half penalty converted by Luuk de Jong was canceled out by a late surge from the visitors.
Dortmund suffered a blow before kickoff with goalkeeper Gregor Kobel ruled out through injury. Replacement Alexander Meyer was fortunate to see Malik Tillman miss an early chance, but PSV took the lead through Malen’s deflected shot in the 24th minute.
PSV’s joy was short-lived as Johan Bakayoko squandered a golden opportunity to double their lead. However, their fortunes changed shortly after the break when Mats Hummels brought down Tillman in the penalty box. Luuk de Jong stepped up to level the score from the spot.
Dortmund refused to lie down and pushed for a winner. Marius Wolf forced a smart save from PSV keeper Walter Benitez, but PSV threatened on the counter through Sergiño Dest, who was denied by Meyer.
Despite their home advantage, PSV couldn’t find a winner, leaving the tie finely balanced heading into the second leg at Signal Iduna Park.
