Napoli have confirmed the dismissal of Walter Mazzarri as their head coach, less than 48 hours before their Champions League clash against Barcelona.
Francesco Calzona has been appointed as Mazzarri’s replacement.
The decision to sack Mazzarri was made by Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis, who reportedly felt that the team was lacking in personality and direction under the former Inter Milan boss.
Mazzarri had only been in charge at Napoli since November, but he had failed to improve the team’s results.
In fact, Napoli’s Serie A form under Mazzarri was actually worse than it had been under his predecessor, Rudi Garcia.
Calzona, meanwhile, is a familiar face at Napoli.
He previously worked as an assistant coach under both Maurizio Sarri and Luciano Spalletti.
He is known for his attacking style of play and his ability to get the best out of young players.
De Laurentiis will be hoping that Calzona can revive Napoli’s fortunes and guide them to a successful season.
Francesco Calzona is the new head coach of Napoli. Welcome, Francesco!
