Borussia Dortmund’s unbeaten start to 2024 hit a snag as they were held to a 1-1 draw by a determined VfL Wolfsburg at the Volkswagen Arena. Despite taking the lead early on, Dortmund were pegged back in the second half and failed to find a winner, dropping valuable points in their pursuit of the top three.
The visitors got off to a shaky start, with Gregor Kobel denying a long-range effort from Wolfsburg’s Kevin Behrens. However, Dortmund quickly roared back, with Marco Reus firing home after receiving a perfect pass from Marcel Sabitzer, only for Nico Füllkrug to bundle the ball over the line for his sixth goal in five matches.
The first half was stop-start, punctuated by protests from the stands, but Wolfsburg continued to create chances. Kevin Paredes missed a glorious header from close range, while Behrens rattled the post deep into injury time. The pressure finally paid off just after the hour mark, when Yannick Gerhardt headed home from a corner to level the score.
Dortmund boss Edin Terzić made changes late on, but despite a late chance for Sabitzer, they couldn’t find a winner. The draw leaves Wolfsburg winless in seven games and hovering near the relegation zone, while Dortmund’s gap to the top three widens.
