LaLiga: Villarreal and Getafe share spoils in entertaining draw

Villarreal and Getafe played out a thrilling 1-1 draw at the Estadio de la Cerámica, extending Getafe’s struggles on the road to just one win in their last 13 away games in LaLiga.

Coming off a dramatic victory over Celta Vigo, Getafe were in the hunt for European spots, but it was Villarreal who started stronger. Gonçalo Guedes nearly put them ahead, but his well-struck shot was ruled out for offside. David Soria, the Getafe goalkeeper, then brilliantly saved a free-kick from Álex Baena.

Against the run of play, Getafe stunned the home crowd with a goal in the 24th minute. Nemanja Maksimović finished clinically after Villarreal failed to deal with Mason Greenwood’s cross. Villarreal responded with urgency, but Soria remained unbeatable, denying efforts from Santi Comesaña and Guedes.

The second half resembled the first, with Villarreal deservedly equalizing before the hour mark. Alberto Moreno reacted quickest to a loose ball at the back post and unleashed a powerful shot past Soria. With momentum on their side, Villarreal pushed for a winner, but Soria once again came to the rescue, tipping José Luis Morales’ effort around the post.

The final stages were evenly contested, but neither side could find the winning goal. This result means Villarreal have drawn three consecutive home league matches for the first time since 2020, while Getafe’s inconsistent form continues with two wins in their last eight games.

Man of the Match: David Soria’s superb saves throughout the game earned him the Flashscore Man of the Match award. His performance kept Getafe in the game and secured them a valuable point.
