Preview: RB Leipzig face Real Madrid in Champions League last 16

RB Leipzig are back in the Champions League round of 16, and they face another European giant in Real Madrid.

Last season, Leipzig were eliminated by Manchester City in the round of 16, losing 8-1 on aggregate. However, they will be hoping to cause an upset against Real Madrid, who they beat 3-2 at home in the group stage last season.

Leipzig’s preparations for the match were not ideal, as they drew 2-2 with Augsburg in the Bundesliga last weekend. The result leaves them seven points adrift of the top four in the Bundesliga.

However, Leipzig have a good record in the Champions League, winning four of their last six home matches. Both teams have scored in Leipzig’s last 10 home matches, so the defenses could be in for a busy night at the Red Bull Arena.

Real Madrid are in excellent form, having won their last five matches in all competitions. They won their Champions League group with a perfect record of six wins, and they are the favorites to win the competition for a 15th time.

Madrid will be looking to avenge their defeat to Leipzig last season, but that is their only defeat in their last 13 Champions League matches against German teams.

Only Leipzig and Manchester City have beaten Real Madrid away from home in the Champions League since February 2022. However, all three of their away wins in the group stage were by a single goal.

Leipzig will be without injured midfielder Jude Bellingham, and they may need to show more resilience than they did against Augsburg. They showed that they can do that away from home, scoring after the 75th minute to win two of their Champions League group matches.

Key players:

Loïs Openda has scored in Leipzig’s last four matches, scoring twice between the 50th and 60th minutes.

Vinícius Júnior scored the opening goal against Girona and has scored three of his last six goals for Madrid in the first 15 minutes.

Hot stat: Leipzig have opened the scoring in the first 15 minutes of three of their last four Champions League matches.
