Barcelona offer Frenkie de Jong new contract with reduced wages

Barcelona have made a risky move to try to keep Frenkie de Jong at the club by offering him a new contract with reduced wages.

The Dutch midfielder is currently under contract until 2026, but he has been linked with a move away from Camp Nou in recent months.

De Jong has been a key player for Barcelona since joining from Ajax in 2019, but his performances have been inconsistent at times.

The club are now hoping to tie him down to a new deal until 2029, but they are willing to reduce his salary in order to do so.

The offer

De Jong’s current contract is worth €24.8 million per year, excluding bonuses. Barcelona are proposing to reduce his salary to €23.3 million next year, and then to €23 million in 2025/26.

There are risks involved in Barcelona’s offer, as De Jong is open to offers from other clubs.

However, it is important to remember that Barcelona have already negotiated salary reductions with other players in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

It is not yet clear whether De Jong will accept Barcelona’s offer. He is understood to be disappointed with the club’s current situation, and he may be tempted to move on in search of a new challenge.

Barcelona’s decision to offer De Jong a new contract with reduced wages is a gamble. It could backfire if he decides to leave the club, but it could also save them a significant amount of money.

The next few weeks will be crucial in determining De Jong’s future. If he accepts Barcelona’s offer, it will be a major boost for the club. However, if he decides to leave, it will be a blow to their hopes of competing for trophies in the near future.
