LaLiga: Almería’s winless streak reaches historic heights despite heroic draw

Almería’s woes deepened as they set a new La Liga record for the longest winless streak, despite holding Athletic Club to a goalless draw with 10 men.

The Red and Whites just can’t buy a win, stretching their winless run to a staggering 27 games dating back to last May. This historic slump, despite a valiant effort against Bilbao, keeps them rooted at the bottom of the table, 13 points adrift of safety.

Both sides had chances to claim victory, with Almería even hitting the woodwork late on through Marezi. But ultimately, neither team could find the target, leaving Almería with a point that feels more like a defeat given their desperate situation.

Athletic started brightly, with Unai Simón denying Dion Lopy’s early effort. Almería had their own opportunities, with Marc Pubill missing a good chance with an outside-of-the-boot effort. Garitano’s men, known for their struggles in front of goal, spurned chances through Ramazani and Lozano.

However, it was Almería’s Luís Maximiano who stole the show in the first half with a fantastic diving save to deny Aitor Paredes’ header.

The second half was a tighter affair, with Ramazani’s red card for a second yellow card making Almería’s task even harder. Despite being a man down, they almost snatched a win through Marezi’s late strike that rattled the crossbar.

Athletic, meanwhile, missed out on moving into the top four but can take comfort in their defensive solidity, having not conceded in nearly seven hours.

For Almería, the outlook remains bleak. Their record-breaking winless streak is a stark reminder of their struggles, and they’ll need a miracle to avoid relegation with so few games remaining.
