Genoa vs Atalanta preview and analysis

Genoa and Atalanta, both unbeaten in 2024, meet on Sunday evening in a clash between two teams with contrasting ambitions.

The 11th-placed hosts have enjoyed a solid run of form since mid-December, drawing five of their last eight matches. They will be looking to extend their unbeaten streak at home, where they have won four and drawn four of their last eight outings.

Genoa’s impressive form has been built on a solid defense that has not conceded more than one goal in a game since late November. Alberto Gilardino’s team continued their good run with a 0-0 draw at Empoli last weekend, a week after coming from behind to win 2-1 against Lecce in their last home game.

Atalanta, meanwhile, are on course for an eighth consecutive top-seven finish in Serie A and head to the Mediterranean coast in fine form, having won nine of their last 11 games in all competitions (1D).

A victory in Genoa would be their fifth in a row after a 3-1 home win over Lazio last weekend. Gian Piero Gasperini’s team have already beaten Genoa this season, winning 2-0 in the reverse fixture in October, and have in fact dominated them home and away over the past decade.

Since May 2016, Atalanta have lost only one of 14 encounters (9W, 4D) and with four clean sheets in their last five games, there is no doubt that a strong defense will once again be the key to success.

Key Players:

Mateo Retegui has scored two goals and provided an assist in Genoa’s last two games in January and his team are unbeaten when he has found the net this season (5W, 1D).

Atalanta loanee midfielder Charles De Ketelaere has already scored five goals and provided three assists since the start of the year. The Belgian has directly contributed to at least one goal in 11 games this season and Atalanta have never lost any of those games!

Hot stat: Atalanta have won only three of their eight Serie A games as away favorites this season (1D, 4L).
