Marseille fans call for Gattuso’s head after Metz draw

Marseille’s 1-1 draw at home to Metz on Sunday has piled the pressure on manager Gennaro Gattuso, with many fans now calling for his head.

Gattuso was appointed in the wake of Jorge Sampaoli’s resignation in February, but he has failed to improve the team’s fortunes.

Marseille have won just one game in 2024, and they are currently in 10th place in Ligue 1.

The fans are particularly frustrated with Gattuso’s tactics, which they believe are too cautious and negative.

After the Metz game, many fans took to social media to call for Gattuso to be sacked.

One fan, Marwan Belkacem, wrote: “Gattuso is a coward as a coach. Not a single coach in recent history has imposed himself at OM without imposing his style: Bielsa, Sampaoli or even Tudor. Gattuso over-intellectualizes to show that he is not afraid, but it simply shows that he does not master anything.”

Another fan, Le Marseillais, was even more blunt: “Yes, Gattuso is not the right man for the job, even more so after his interview tonight. He is at the bottom of the hole. He either resigns or the president fires him to save what is left. I can’t wait for the injured players and Mbamba to return to raise our heads.”

Gattuso’s future at Marseille is now in doubt.

The club’s president, Pablo Longoria, has so far resisted calls to sack him, but the pressure is mounting.

It is possible that Gattuso could be given until the end of the season to turn things around, but if results do not improve, he is likely to be axed.
