Ligue 1: Marseille Dig Deep for Draw After Red Card Drama in Metz

Marseille held on for a 1-1 draw against Metz despite playing with 10 men for most of the game after a controversial red card decision.

Marseille started strong, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang causing problems in the Metz box. They thought they had taken the lead when Illiman Ndiaye tapped in after a goalkeeping error, but the goal was ruled out for a foul on the keeper.

Disaster struck for Marseille when defender Samuel Gigot was shown a red card for a foul on Georges Mikautadze after a VAR review. Despite being down a man, Marseille kept battling and took the lead through Faris Moumbagna after Aubameyang’s shot was parried into his path.

Metz hit back quickly through Matthieu Udol’s header, and the game settled into a tense stalemate. Aubameyang almost snatched a winner late on, but his header was cleared off the line.

The draw moves Marseille up to seventh, but they have played more games than most of their rivals for European qualification. Metz remain in the relegation zone, two points from safety.
