Cristiano Ronaldo was involved in a controversial incident on Tuesday night after Al-Nassr lost 2-0 to Al-Hilal in the Riyadh Season Cup.
The Portuguese star, who has been playing in Saudi Arabia since January, was visibly frustrated by the result and was seen to make an obscene gesture towards Al-Hilal fans.
According to RMC Sport, Ronaldo rubbed an Al-Hilal shirt, which had been thrown at him by the opposing fans, against his crotch. He then threw the shirt on the ground before storming off the pitch.
The incident has sparked a mixed reaction on social media, with some people condemning Ronaldo’s behavior and others defending him.
Ronaldo’s gesture has been widely condemned by fans and pundits.
“It’s a disgrace,” said former England international Gary Lineker. “Ronaldo is a role model for millions of people around the world and he should be setting a better example.”
“He’s a petulant child,” added former Manchester United teammate Rio Ferdinand. “He needs to learn to control his emotions.”
Others have defended Ronaldo, arguing that he was simply reacting to the provocation of the Al-Hilal fans.
“He’s only human,” said former Real Madrid teammate Karim Benzema. “He was being abused by the fans and he lost his cool.”
“It’s not the first time something like this has happened,” added former Barcelona star Andres Iniesta. “It’s part of the game.”
Ronaldo has not yet commented on the incident.
It remains to be seen whether he will face any disciplinary action from the Saudi Arabian Football Federation.
