Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen a doubt for AFCON semi-final

Nigeria’s star striker Victor Osimhen is a major doubt for the country’s Africa Cup of Nations semi-final against South Africa on Wednesday.

The Napoli forward did not travel with the rest of the squad to Bouake for the match due to abdominal discomfort. Team spokesperson Babafemi Raji said: “Osimhen did not make the trip due to abdominal discomfort. The team doctors have confirmed that he has been placed under close surveillance and a member of the medical team has remained with him in Abidjan. If he recovers tomorrow morning (Tuesday), he will join the rest of the team before 5pm.”

Osimhen did not train with the team before their departure from Abidjan either. He has scored one goal and provided one assist in five appearances at the tournament, but was on the receiving end of some tough challenges in the quarter-final win over Angola.

However, Nigeria still have plenty of firepower in their ranks, with Ademola Lookman in fine form. The Leicester City forward has scored three goals in four appearances at AFCON, and will be looking to add to his tally against South Africa.
