Real Madrid 1-1 Atletico Madrid: Player Ratings

Man of the Match: Brahim Diaz (8)

Brahim Diaz was the most dangerous player on the pitch tonight, and the Bernabeu crowd rose to their feet when he was substituted. The summer signing started in place of the injured Vinicius and made a real impact. In the first half, his link-up play with Lucas Vazquez was particularly impressive. The Spaniard was rewarded for his efforts with a fortuitous goal, where he cleverly followed the trajectory of the ball (20′). Even in the second half, when he switched to the left flank, he created several chances and continued to entertain the Merengue fans. He was given a standing ovation when he was replaced by Joselu (70′).

Atletico Madrid (3-5-2)

Jan Oblak (GK) (5.5): A solid performance from the Slovenian. He could do nothing about the goal but was otherwise reassuring between the posts and in his distribution. He was also helped by the profligacy of the home attackers.

Marcos Llorente (7): The right wing-back had a good game. As usual, he made a number of high-intensity attacking runs and intelligent off-the-ball movements, but he was not always picked out. Defensively, he had a quiet evening, rarely facing a serious challenge from a ghost-like Rodrygo. He was moved into midfield in an attempt to limit the transitions, and he was Simeone’s savior, equalizing with a powerful header in the 93rd minute, capping off a fine performance.

Axel Witsel (5.5): The former midfielder, who was playing in central defense, spent the game covering for the mistakes of his teammates Hermoso and Riquelme. Although he seemed to be a step behind the action on the goal, he still had a decent game.

Stefan Savic (6): The right-sided center-back also had a relatively quiet evening. He was rarely troubled and won the few duels he faced. The Montenegrin played a key role in earning a point tonight with his long ball to Memphis that led to the equalizer.

Mario Hermoso (4): Real Madrid focused their attacks down his flank and caused him a lot of problems. Although he was not the only one responsible, the Spaniard was subjected to a number of waves of attacks. He was troubled by Bellingham’s movement and Diaz’s pace, and he was not at his best in the derby tonight.

Nicolas Riquelme (3.5): He was tasked with limiting the threat of Brahim Diaz, but the man of the match had a field day against the Argentine defender. He struggled throughout the first half before being replaced by Molina (45′), who was slightly better than his compatriot but still not impressive.

Saul Niguez (3.5): The former Chelsea midfielder looked exhausted from the early minutes of the derby. Defensively, he was never able to help Riquelme, and offensively, he was anonymous, both in the build-up and in the final third. He was too quiet and was replaced by Lino (61′), who tried to inject some pace but with little success.

Rodrigo De Paul (6): Unquestionably the best midfielder for the Colchoneros, the Argentine played his usual game. He was average defensively but was the only player capable of breaking lines with his accurate long passing. When Atletico have the ball, he is the only one who can see it, but unfortunately, his defensive contribution leaves something to be desired. He was replaced by Barrios (61′) who did not make a particularly significant impact.

Koke (C) (5): The captain had a mixed performance. He struggled to defend against Ancelotti’s men’s quick transitions, and with the ball, he was accurate but not inspired enough to break lines. He was replaced by a dynamic and incisive Correa (68′).

Antoine Griezmann (4.5): When he gets the ball, he always makes something happen, and he has a feel for the game that very few players have. However, he was too quiet and did not take on his leadership role in this kind of high-stakes match. He was too often isolated on the opposite side of the ball, and he could have saved his game with a beautiful bicycle kick (76′) but was denied by Lunin.

Alvaro Morata (3.5): The Spanish international had a few chances early in the game but faded as the match went on. Morata was also not helped by the lack of creativity of his teammates, and he was anonymous. He was replaced by Memphis Depay (61′) who was dynamic with his movement and off-the-ball runs. He provided the assist for Llorente’.

Real Madrid (4-3-1-2)
