Rayo Vallecano vs Sevilla: Preview and Predictions

Rayo Vallecano were on course for a 1-1 draw against Atletico Madrid before a cruel 90th-minute goal and a subsequent red card for Rayo boss Francisco left them with nothing. The result extends their winless run in the league to three games (1d, 2l) and Rayo are in danger of drifting into mid-table obscurity, sitting eight points above the relegation zone and 12 points off the European places ahead of this matchday.

Rayo’s problems this season have largely stemmed from their poor home form, which has seen them go eight games without a win at the Campo de Fútbol de Vallecas (5d, 3l). This is their longest winless run at home since a run of 11 games in 2022. They will be hoping to end that streak against Sevilla, who find themselves incredibly embroiled in a relegation battle this season.

Sevilla in danger of relegation

A 1-1 draw with Osasuna last time out means Sevilla head into this matchday just one point above the relegation zone, with just 17 points on the board – their lowest total after 22 La Liga games since their relegation season in 1999/00. Sevilla will therefore need to end their five-game winless streak in the league to start pulling away from the bottom three. However, they have only drawn three of their last four visits here (1w).

This fits in well with coach Quique Sánchez Flores’ 100% draw record in his personal clashes against Rayo (3d), although he will be hoping to end that streak here, as his three wins in all competitions since his appointment in December have all come away from home. Despite this positive, Sevilla travel here having conceded six goals in two away games since taking the lead at Girona, and their porous defence is a huge area for improvement.

Players to watch: Álvaro García celebrated his return from suspension by scoring for Rayo last time out, but he has failed to win any of his last four appearances as a goalscorer (2d, 2l), including the 2-2 draw in the reverse fixture. Similarly, Lucas Ocampos has only won one of his four appearances as a goalscorer this season (2d, 1l), although that victory was their only away win in the league in 2023/24.

Hot stat: Rayo have only won two of their seven league games as favourites this season (2w, 3d, 2l).

Prediction: Rayo Vallecano 1-1 Sevilla

Both teams are in poor form and struggling to score goals. I expect a close and low-scoring draw.
