Fiorentina vs Inter Preview: Fiorentina looks to bounce back from Coppa Italia disappointment

After a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Napoli in the Coppa Italia semi-finals, Fiorentina will be looking to get back to winning ways in Serie A on Sunday. The Viola currently sit in fourth place, but with the five teams below them separated by just three points, they can’t afford to let a two-game winless streak (1D, 1D) stretch into three.

A return to the Stadio Artemio Franchi, which has been something of a fortress in recent times, should help them to get back on track. The home side have only dropped points once in their last eight official matches at the ground (7W, 1D). That includes four league wins, but that record is under serious threat with the visit of Inter Milan.

The Supercoppa winners have the chance to win four consecutive away games in Serie A for the first time in their history, and to complete a league double over Fiorentina for the second time in the last 10 seasons, following their 4-0 win in the reverse fixture. The Nerazzurri travel to Florence after winning a third consecutive Supercoppa and looking to keep up the pressure on Juventus at the top of the table.

As Juventus play first this weekend, Inter will know the state of play before they take to the field. But with 11 wins in their last 14 league matches (3D), the team already know that they’re in good form. That motivation is even greater away from home, as Inter are the only team yet to lose a league match on the road this season (8W, 2D). That’s thanks in no small part to a defence that has conceded just four goals away from home. That’s a Serie A record.

Players to watch: Fiorentina’s only win over Inter in the league since the start of the 2017/18 season came thanks to a goal from Giacomo Bonaventura last season. The answer for Inter could come from Lautaro Martínez. He scored the title-winning goal in the Supercoppa and contributed to the first three goals (2G, 1A) in a 4-3 win at this ground last season.

Hot stat: Fiorentina have scored the opening goal in the first 15 minutes of 10 of their 18 Serie A matches this season.
