The 18-year-old Belgian midfielder had been linked with a move to a number of top European clubs, including Barcelona and Arsenal. However, he has opted to join Diego Simeone’s side on a six-year deal worth a reported €27 million.
“Arthur Vermeeren is now red and white!” the club announced in a statement. “The Belgian international has signed with our club for the rest of the season and six more seasons.”
Vermeeren is considered one of the most promising young players in Europe. He has made 20 appearances for Antwerp this season, scoring three goals and providing two assists.
