Jérôme Boateng, who has been without a club since leaving Olympique Lyonnais in the summer, is reportedly close to joining Salernitana.
According to Sky Sports, the Italian club is interested in signing the German defender. Journalist Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Salernitana has already started talks with Boateng, and that Thursday could be a key day in the negotiations.
Ribéry could be key to the deal.
Boateng and Ribéry were teammates at Bayern Munich, and Ribéry also played for Salernitana for two seasons (2021-2022 and 2022-2023). The former French international is now part of the Salernitana coaching staff under Filippo Inzaghi.
Boateng’s signature would be a major boost for Salernitana’s defense, which is the worst in the league. It would also close the door on a return to Bayern Munich for the World Cup winner.
Here’s hoping this transfer doesn’t fall through like it did in October 2023, when the man with over 600 professional appearances ended up leaving Olympiacos.
