Marseille Stumble Late, Strasbourg Extend Streak in Dramatic Draw

Olympique de Marseille’s unbeaten streak against RC Strasbourg Alsace might have hit 17 games, but their hopes for three points evaporated in stoppage time of a thrilling 1-1 draw. Meanwhile, Strasbourg’s unbeaten run in Ligue 1 stretched to five games, leaving both sides with mixed emotions.

Marseille, on fire with 13 points from their last five games, started like a rocket. Captain Samuel Gigot headed home after just minutes, giving them the perfect platform. But VAR drama added spice to the early minutes, overturning an initial offside call to the visitors’ disappointment.

Strasbourg refused to crumble. They tested Pau López in goal and missed a golden chance themselves, denied a penalty despite Meïté’s clumsy challenge on Mwanga. Gameiro and Aubameyang both threatened, the latter failing to add to his impressive nine-goal run in nine games.

The second half mirrored the first: Strasbourg controlling possession but lacking incisiveness. Gigot, imperious in defense, almost turned provider, feeding Veretout whose shot was blocked. Vieira and Gattuso, the coaches, shuffled their decks, but it was late drama that stole the show.

Bakwa rattled the bar for Strasbourg, then disaster struck for Marseille. A poor Clauss header gifted Jérémy Sebas a golden opportunity in injury time, and he buried it. The celebrations were barely over when Dion, brought on just moments earlier, missed a chance to snatch a winner for Strasbourg.

Both sides leave with bittersweet feelings. Marseille have their unbeaten streak against Strasbourg intact, but the late concession stings. Strasbourg’s unbeaten run continues, but they missed a chance for a fourth consecutive win for the first time since 2019. Attention now turns to the Coupe de France, with Marseille facing Rennes and Strasbourg taking on Clermont Foot.
