AS Roma: José Mourinho mulls summer exit

As the Giallorossi sit in eighth place in the league, José Mourinho could well leave Rome at the end of the season. His contract expires on June 30 and the Portuguese coach is considering a new challenge.

Arriving at the AS Roma bench in 2021, José Mourinho restored the Giallorossi’s glory days by winning the Conference League in 2022, before losing the Europa League final in 2023. Unfortunately, this third season of the Portuguese at the head of the Wolf is more eventful. In October last year, rumors of a possible departure were already circulating in the Italian press: “Three months ago, I was loved. There was panic just talking about my goodbyes. Today, since we had a horrible start to the season in the league, I am questioned. But it’s not a problem. You don’t stop talking about the future, but I don’t have to talk about the future,” the coach had then specified. But the months go by and the results are not at their best, especially in Serie A. A departure from José Mourinho at the end of his contract is not impossible, quite the contrary. According to our information, the two parties, Mourinho and the Roman club, are in full reflection on their common future.

“Brazil did not call me to become the new coach. I told my agent: don’t talk to anyone as long as I’m the coach of AS Roma. I trust 100% the owners of AS Roma. I have always kept them informed, including when Portugal called me… And when the Saudi club called me last summer,” the 60-year-old Portuguese recently explained. José Mourinho has repeated it: he will not negotiate during a season out of respect for the Roman management with whom he has very good relations and in order not to disrupt his group, still in the running for the Coppa Italia, Serie A and the Europa League. Despite this cordial understanding, the coach from Setúbal is not sure he wants to extend his contract with AS Roma, which will then have to write a new chapter.

The impact of Tiago Pinto’s departure

According to our information, the upcoming official departure of the sporting director, Tiago Pinto, could also lead to the programmed end of José Mourinho’s time on the Roman bench. Very close to the Special One, the Portuguese leader had been the main architect of the arrival of the former Real Madrid and Chelsea coach on the Giallorossi bench in 2021. As his contract with the Wolf expires on June 30, José Mourinho is hesitating to stay in Rome. Negotiations for a renewal are not completely closed today, but Mourinho is thinking about leaving. The president and owner of the club, Dan Friedkin, has already listed several names to take over the possible succession of the Portuguese tactician. Among these profiles, Raffaele Palladino, Gian Piero Gasperini and Ivan Juric enjoy a good reputation internally, as their respective contracts with Monza, Atalanta and Torino will expire. Without a bench for several years, Antonio Conte and Igor Tudor are also appreciated. Internally, the signals are quite unanimous about a possible departure from Mourinho, who is concretely considering a new unprecedented challenge. But the ball is still in the camp of José Mourinho who will have the final say. Affair to follow on this side.

The latter is very attracted to a challenge in Saudi Arabia to participate in the development of Saudi football or to take charge of a national team, less than two years before the next World Cup. But obviously, the next coach of AS Roma will be largely determined by the future sporting director: “It was three beautiful years with José Mourinho and Tiago Pinto, but today, we are being made to understand internally that we need to start a new transition to regain success at the national level,” one of Alberto De Rossi’s development director assistants confides in us. According to our sources, to take over Tiago Pinto’s work, the Roman club is sounding out several executives including François Modesto, currently in office at Monza. Bribing the Palladino/Modesto duo is more than just a possibility. Federico Cherubini, Javier Ribalta and Frederic Massara are also names to watch. The time for change should therefore be scheduled for July next.
