Match Preview: Juventus and Roma set for another classic Serie A clash

Dušan Vlahović scored a late winner as Juventus beat Frosinone 2-1 before Christmas to extend their unbeaten run in Serie A to 12 games. The Old Lady will be looking to finish 2023 on a high as they record their best start to a league campaign since 2019-20, the season they last won the title.

The Juve coach and directors have repeatedly said that their target this season is simply to qualify for the Champions League, and they currently sit 10 points clear of fifth place. They occupy second place behind league leaders Inter, and they remain the only team in Serie A not to have lost a home league match this season (6 wins, 2 draws). However, they have only managed to score more than one goal in three of those games.

Roma are targeting “fourth place or better” according to Romelu Lukaku, after the Giallorossi ended a two-match winless run by beating Napoli 2-0 last weekend. However, that clean sheet was not enough for José Mourinho, who is reportedly trying to bring back former Juventus legend Leonardo Bonucci to help the capital club in their bid to return to the Champions League.

Roma, who start the weekend five points off third place, need to improve their away form if they are to achieve their ambitions. They have only won twice away from home this season (2 draws, 4 losses), and they have not scored in four of their last six away games. They have also only won one of their last 14 meetings with Juventus at the Allianz Stadium.

Players to watch: Vlahović’s header against Frosinone may have convinced Allegri to start him again. This could be a wise move, as he opened the scoring in the second minute of the last meeting between the sides. Lukaku celebrated his return to the squad after suspension by scoring against Napoli. He could have an impact early on, as three of his last four goals have been scored in the first 25 minutes.

Hot stat: There has been a goal scored in the first 20 minutes in four of the last five meetings between these two sides.
