Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso is closing in on a deal to sign Real Madrid starlet Sergio Arribas in the January transfer window, according to Planetarealmadrid.
The Spanish midfielder is keen to strengthen his squad for the second half of the season as the Bundesliga leaders look to challenge Bayern Munich for the title.
Arribas, 20, is a highly-rated attacking midfielder who has been on loan at Almería this season. He has scored nine goals and provided six assists in 17 La Liga appearances.
Alonso is a former Real Madrid player and knows Arribas well from his time at the club’s academy. He believes the youngster would be a valuable addition to his squad.
“Sergio is a talented player with a lot of potential,” Alonso said. “He is a creative midfielder who can score goals and create chances. He would be a good fit for our team.”
Real Madrid are willing to let Arribas leave on loan in January, but they are likely to demand a significant fee. The Spanish giants are keen to keep hold of the player, who is seen as a key part of their future.
Arribas is expected to undergo a medical at Leverkusen in the coming days before the deal is finalized.
Leverkusen may go in for Sergio Arribas this winter. Xabi Alonso wanted him in the summer, but with Almeria struggling they may look to make a sale while they can.
