Harry Kane chases Bundesliga goal record, finally the Golden Boot?

Harry Kane has hit the ground running since his move to Munich. In his debut season, he is posting impressive numbers and is well on track to break the Bundesliga goal record and win the first Golden Boot of his career.

Kane was one of the best strikers in the Premier League and one of the best in the world during his 10 years at Tottenham, but he could not count on team trophies at Spurs and, as a result, individual trophies were not easy to come by either.

The Englishman became the top scorer in the top flight three times during that time, but it is interesting to note that none of these titles were won when he scored his highest number of goals in a season. He won the crown in 2016 (25 goals), 2017 (29 goals) and 2021 (23 goals). In the 2017/18 and 2022/23 seasons, he scored 30 goals in the Premier League, but Mohamed Salah (32 goals) and Erling Haaland (36 goals) were better. He finished second each time.

Kane has been three times the Premier League top scorer, but has never managed to win the Golden Boot, which is awarded to the best European goalscorer. Since the 2007/08 season, the winner of this award must always have scored at least 31 goals in the league, and the former Spurs striker has never managed to reach that figure. He now has everything he needs to finally cross this bar.

Since his transfer to Bayern Munich, Kane has been impressive and has made a sensation on the German pitches. In 15 matches, he has been left goalless only three times. These were against Borussia Mönchengladbach, Freiburg and Eintracht Frankfurt. The Englishman, on the other hand, has already scored a hat-trick three times in the Bundesliga (against VfL Bochum, Darmstadt and Borussia Dortmund). In total, he has scored 21 goals in 15 matches and is on course to be crowned top scorer and break Robert Lewandowski’s record.

The Bundesliga goal record for a season belongs to Lewandowski, who finished the 2020/21 season with 41 goals, breaking the mark set by legendary Gerd Müller. Harry Kane still has 19 league matches to play and is 20 goals away from equaling the Pole’s record. If the Englishman maintains his form from autumn to spring, he could already achieve a feat for his first season.

The good form of the Bayern striker also puts him in the lead in the race for the Golden Boot, which he has never won in his career. He currently has 21 goals to his name and is the leader of this ranking. His biggest rival for this trophy should be Kylian Mbappé, who also does not have this statuette in his collection. The Frenchman has scored 18 goals in Ligue 1, but he has two days left to play, and let us remember that since this season, there are 18 and not 20 teams playing in the French top flight, so he does not have the advantage of having more matches to play.

For the 2022/23 season, the Golden Boot was awarded to Erling Haaland, while in the two previous seasons, it was Robert Lewandowski who triumphed. From the 2009/10 season to the 2018/19 campaign, this trophy was only won by Lionel Messi (6 times), Cristiano Ronaldo (3 times) and Luis Suárez (2 times). The Portuguese and Uruguayan won this award together in 2014. In 2020, this statuette was won by Ciro Immobile. He is the first player from Serie A since the 2006/07 season to win the Golden Boot. At the time, the Golden Boot was awarded to Francesco Totti.

Bayern Munich and Harry Kane are currently taking a break from league matches and will not resume competition until January 12. The Bavarians will then face Hoffenheim, then Werder, Union Berlin and Augsburg. With the exception of the “Viennas”, all of these teams are in the bottom half of the table, so this will be the perfect opportunity for the Englishman to improve his goalscoring record.
