Yann Bisseck, the “walking mountain” who has shored up Europe’s greatest wall

Inter Milan, Atlético Madrid’s Champions League round of 16 opponent, proudly boasts the best defense in the major leagues. The Nerazzurri have conceded just seven goals in 17 league matches and have kept a clean sheet 12 times.

In the “wall” formed by Darmian, Acerbi, and Bastoni, a promising young player has made a name for himself: Yann Aurel Ludger Bisseck (Cologne, November 29, 2000).

The former Cologne player, who in 2017 became the youngest German player (16 years, 11 months, and 18 days) to debut in the Bundesliga, has continued to break records of precocity.

Six years later, he continues to break records. He took advantage of the victory over Lecce (2-0) to become the first Inter defender born in 2000 or later to score in Serie A.

Yann Bisseck, as he is nicknamed, used his 196 centimeters of height to head in a free kick from Calhanoglu. The central defender capitalized on the attacks, especially from set pieces: he was the player who shot the most times (4) and, with the score at 0-0, hit the crossbar.

Defensively, Bisseck has been solid. He has started three consecutive Serie A matches, and the Nerazzurri have kept a clean sheet in all three. In the first of them, against Udinese (4-0), he was particularly loose with the ball: he completed the most passes (107 of 112).

“The prototype of the defender of the future”

The former Aarhus player, who was signed this summer for €7 million, stands out for his exuberant physique.

“He is a walking mountain. The power this boy has is incredible. I consider him an anomalous central defender who fits the prototype of the defender of the future,” recognized David Nielsen, his first coach in Denmark.

In Aarhus, he left his mark as a goalscoring defender: he scored five goals in 35 matches last season. La Gazzetta, on the other hand, highlights his personality: “He takes the ball and dares to go forward in situations of play that are improper for a defender, especially given his size. And that is because, although he is close to 2 meters tall, he has enviable coordination with the ball at his feet. In addition, he is a wall in defense.”

Eto’o wants to sign him for Cameroon

Bisseck’s good work has not gone unnoticed by one Interista in particular: Samuel Eto’o. The central defender captained Germany at the recent Under-21 European Championship, but he has Cameroonian roots and the president of the “Indomitable Lions” wants to use it to convince him to play in the Africa Cup of Nations in January. It doesn’t seem easy…

Despite his early debut, Bisseck only played three games with the first team of Cologne. He was loaned out to Holstein Kiel (Second Division), Roda JC, and Vitória Guimarães before moving to Aarhus, first on loan and then transferred in 2022.

Adaptation problems and injuries – in the foot and knee ligaments – slowed his progress. In Denmark, finally, the “walking mountain” regained his stride and is now shining at Inter.

The 23-year-old Bisseck is a key part of Inter’s title challenge. He is a physical presence at the back who is also comfortable on the ball. He has the potential to be one of the best defenders in the world.
