Lyon Close to Hiring Jorge Sampaoli

Experienced coach Jorge Sampaoli might be on the verge of adding a new chapter to his illustrious career. According to information provided by Gastón Edul, a respected journalist from TyC Sports, Sampaoli is close to becoming the next head coach of Lyon in France.

This would be the Argentine’s second foray into French football, having previously managed Olympique de Marseille. Lyon, currently going through a significant crisis and sitting in the last position in Ligue 1, sees Sampaoli as the key figure to reverse their current situation.

Jorge Sampaoli, on the brink of Lyon

Following the recent dismissal of Fabio Grosso, who lasted only three months in the coaching role, Lyon is in search of a new leader on the sidelines, and Sampaoli emerges as the primary target for this challenge.

In the course of 2023, Sampaoli has already managed Sevilla and Flamengo, and if his move to Lyon materializes, it would mark his third team in the same year. Despite results falling short of expectations in his previous experiences, the Argentine coach has maintained his prestige, receiving substantial compensations and continues to be the subject of significant offers.

The Peruvian Football Federation considered him as a possible candidate to succeed Juan Reynoso in preparation for the 2024 Copa América and the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, highlighting his successful track record in domestic football with teams like Juan Aurich, Sport Boys, Coronel Bolognesi, and Sporting Cristal.

His stint at Olympique de Marseille was noteworthy, leading the team to second place in Ligue 1, only behind Lionel Messi’s Paris Saint-Germain, and securing direct qualification to the Champions League. Now, Lyon hopes that Sampaoli can bring his experience and expertise to revitalize the crisis-hit team and steer it towards success in the French competition.
